Becoming an IAM "Master"
Phew, well I did it! With huge thanks to the IAM mentoring team and my awesome examiner, yesterday I passed the IAM Masters certification.
What is that you ask? Well the IAM describe it like this:
Open to all current IAM members, our Masters programme provides true one-to-one mentoring support and guidance that will help you to attain the highest standard of civilian driving or riding ability in the country. There are no exemption qualifications to our Masters standard.
I guess some would maybe claim that this is a vanity project - another certificate for a man with too much time....
But I cannot agree. I believe that driving and riding is one of the most dangerous things we do, and that we need to undertake constant coaching or updates on the skills we need to cope with very complex road conditions, or remain safe with vastly changing driving circumstances.
How many of us have features on our car or bike that we neither use or fully understand? What does cornering ABS really do? Ho do I set the distance for my automatic cruise control? Why do I care about a lean sensitive ECU at all?
Keeping updated with honest and well delivered expert feedback is so vital, and for me the 2 hour test was one thing, but by far the best investment was the detailed debrief from the examiner - pure gold! As you can expect, there was also some pretty intense coaching and practice that goes into reaching a test standard too.
My thanks to all that helped me with this journey to the Masters ticket and I do recommend it. Look, if I can do it.....
